Being Awesome: Anna Wolf

I can go to Anna’s site and get lost in her sexy, too cool for school, badass, retro with a twist of vintage images. Anna is a fashion, portrait, and lifestyle photographer in whose dreamy world I could surely get lost. She recently emailed to update me on some of her new work. Alison Pill for The Lab Magazine, new fashion stories for SOMA and Clone Magazine, and portraits for the YSL Parisienne launch. Ummm. Yes, please. Here’s some candy. Delish.

Location, Location, Location

You know the age-old adage. Location is always THE factor for any event. Lately, we have been receiving a ton of emails announcing new venues, reintroducing old ones, and every service in-between. But, these two location scouting services caught our eye. Want a rustic French cottage situated in the the hills of a remote village? Done. Or, what about Moroccan escape? Yep. In need of a beach house, lake house, or any kind of house you can images? Enter L.A. based Image Locations and Luxe Home Swap. Both are on-line catalogues of the most chic homes, apartments, and spaces you’ve seen. You can get lost on both sites for hours. We were imagining where we could plan our next event and then how soon we can move-in afterwards. Or, you can totally use these endless images as inspiration for your next redesign.

Being Awesome: The Church Estate

So, Noah, Kelly & I took the drive up the 101 to the Church Estate in Malibu yesterday for a walk-thru. We have a client getting married there later this year and all we can say is A.MA.ZING! The Church Estate sits on a nine acre vineyard and is home to the most lovely stables, an incredible boat house, clay tennis court, and killer views. The 8000 sq ft house is design perfection. No detail is overlooked. Every room is decorated with its own unique French Provincial palette. The kitchen has the largest farmhouse sink I’ve ever seen and the wine cellar has 2000 year-old stone floors imported from Cypress, yes 2000 year-old stones. Although many a celeb has been married at the Estate, our plans are to make this party like no other the estate has ever hosted. True LHE-style. Brills.

too cool for school: Portland General Store

Check it. These lovelies are rad. Portland General Store, on Etsy, takes vintage bottles and replaces them with new, lovely smelling goodness. Although they are “suppose” to be for men, who says you can’t pick up some Wood Body Creme, or have a blast with Whiskey Soap? And, if you are sharing the love you can always order some Tabac After-Shave for your man. Green, hip, and supporting local trade. Loves.

Being Awesome: Boom Boom Room

Yes, you read that correctly.  The Boom Boom Room is now open to the public and for private parties.  What is it you ask?  A throwback space, located in the new Standard Hotel in the MPD.  Outfitted with 1970s retro-modern decor:  gold chairs, black tiles, and lots of cream leather.  An aesthetic that any Riunite drinking, Three’s Company watching, tracksuit wearing, lover of all-things 70s inspired will appreciate.  Enjoy.  We did.

Knit Couture

Our friend Julia is a fashion designer, working primarily with what I like to call “knit couture.” She is an incredible talent. Recently, she showed me some of her amazing new bridal designs. Julia is beginning to step into the wedding area, as she is currently designing a friend’s gown, who is to be married on Martha’s Vineyard in September. Also, she has her first special commission for a wedding next July. I think her work is so sexy and fresh. Each dress is completely one of a kind.

The first dress is entirely knit by hand with antiqued ribbon and pearls.

The second gown with the rose train was draped and sewn by hand with fabric that Julia designed on a small circular knitting machine. It is trimmed in pearls.

The third gown, is made of fine silk embroidery thread knit in an openwork pattern. It is incredibly delicate. Its upper bodice and lower skirt are hand-knit with strands of pearls.

Julia describes her love of “the idea of dressing a bride in a gown that is, in essence, her own little ‘treasure’ — something handmade with an heirloom quality that will be passed down to her daughters and to theirs.”

Please email me (lyndsey@lyndseyhamiltonevents.com) if you are interested in learning more about Julia’s wedding gowns.

Being Awesome = Brains on Fire Blog

So, as I am sure you all know, the always-inspiring Abby from Style Me Pretty has redesigned her site.  To be expected, it looks amazing!  As we always say, we are so honored to be included in such esteemed company in SMPs Little Black Book –Manhattan & Orange County.  Abby also gave a shout-out to the company responsible for the re-design and we did some investigating.  What did we find?  A rad blog from Brains on Fire.  Inspiring content.  A new must-read.  Below is a recent post.  It beautifully (and comically) articulates exactly how we feel about OUR small business.  Loves. It.  Thanks for putting this out there!

It’s the culture, stupid.

Posted on May 29th, 2009 by Spike and currently 1 commenting.

It’s a concept that is tossed around a lot these days – especially when people are trying to figures out what makes an intriguing company tick. Tony Hsieh preaches it when he talks about the magic of Zappos. There are consultants who promise to teach you how to change one or create one. Books that try to dismantle tribes and cults to find the basic principals of what a strong culture is. And it’s all really interesting stuff.
I know we’ve all probably been a part of a crappy company culture. But I don’t know if we’ve all been lucky enough to be a part of a strong, productive, enjoyable company culture. Cult-like almost. Tight-knit. But one that watches each others backs.
So this is the part where I tell you that there is no magic bullet for a strong company culture. But I can tell you that it doesn’t come from an employee handbook that talks about your values. It doesn’t come from a mandate given out by the C-level suite. It isn’t a department or a position or a line on the checklist of accomplishments.
Maybe it’s because cultures are organic. Maybe it’s because your culture is created by everyone who works there. It’s owned by all of them. And it will only thrive in an environment that allows for everyone to own it. Yes, the C-level guys can set the tone and direction, but they can’t create the culture. Culture it bottom-up.
Then, once it starts to flourish, the handbooks embrace and extend it. Your gear starts to make sense – because they are just the tactics – not the underlying drivers of the culture.
I’ve been at Brains on Fire for nine years now. And I’ve seen the culture evolve since 2000, but it’s always been a strong one. Why? Because the principals have created an environment where we all feel valued. Where we all can contribute in our own unique way. We can come up with our own ideas about handbooks or underground websites or merit badges or rituals and implement them on our own. In short, we all have ownership of the culture. And we know it’s our job to keep it healthy and strong. Maybe it’s why after something like 2400 work days at Brains on Fire, I still can’t wait to get out of bed in the morning and go to the office. These people are my family. And we endure the good and bad together, because we (not he or she or them) are in this together. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
